Exploring Hebrews 7

When I was looking at Hebrews recently, I saw that there were so many great truths in those texts, and wanted to share what I gained from the texts I was reading as I think they prove invaluable to our relationship with God.

Hebrews 7 really offers profound insights into Jesus's nature and his role in our relationship with God the Father by drawing a significant comparison between Jesus and Melchizedek. The author of Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus is superior to Melchizedek and any other priestly figure, highlighting the central theme of the book: The supremacy of Jesus. 

Melchizedek, whose story is briefly recounted in Genesis 14, is a unique figure. As the King of Salem and a priest of God Most High, Melchizedek blesses Abram after his victory, and Abram, in turn, gives him a tenth of everything he owns. This encounter is significant because Melchizedek is both a king and a priest, a combination rarely seen. Jesus, too, is a priest-king, fulfilling both roles perfectly.

Jesus's priesthood is crucial for several reasons. First, His sacrifice is complete and eternal. Unlike the Levitical priests, who had to offer numerous sacrifices repeatedly to atone for the sins of the Israelites, Jesus's single sacrifice on the cross is sufficient for all time. His sacrifice not only appeases God but completely erases our sin, making us new creations.

Second, Jesus provides superior communication between God and humanity. Finally, Jesus is the perfect priest. The role of a priest is to mediate between God and the people. Jesus, through His death and resurrection, has made direct communication with God possible for us. While the Levitical priests could only enter God's presence once a year on the Day of Atonement, Jesus is perpetually in God's presence, seated at His right hand. As God Himself, Jesus ensures continuous access to the Father. Furthermore, unlike the imperfect Levitical priests who needed to be replaced due to their mortality and sinfulness, Jesus, being sinless and eternal, holds His priesthood permanently. This permanence provides us with security in the new covenant, knowing that our mediator is unchanging and everlasting.

In summary, Hebrews 7 underscores Jesus's superiority as our eternal priest-king, whose perfect sacrifice and constant intercession secure our relationship with God forever.
