Hey everyone! If you love reading and/or need some books to read this year, this post is for you. Two of the books below are the first books of a series. I would recommend most of these books to readers who are 13 or older. Enjoy!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows - It's a super long title, I know, but this book was very good. It's a little slow starting, but it moves into the storyline of a book club trying to have community in the midst of the occupation of Nazi Germans on the island of Guernsey, Britain. This book shows a glimpse of what it was like to live with the German occupation and the recovery and renewal of life that came after.
The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys - Based in 1975, Madrid, there are many questionable things going on among the people of Spain that certain tourists - such as American photographer Daniel Matheson - are trying to uncover. What will the consequences be? Will the wrongs being done come to light? Read Fountains of Silence to find out.
The Maze Runner by James Dashner - This is a dystopian book series about a boy named Thomas who wakes up in a maze called the Glade. There are other boys there who along with Thomas have no memory of their past: who they are, where they came from, and where they are now. They're all stuck in this ominous place with seemingly no way to escape. But then a girl appears with a note in her hand which changes everything. Read The Maze Runner series to find out how they escape, who's behind it all, and what happened to the world.
The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave - I typically don't like mystery-type books, but this was amazing. Hannah Hall marries Owen who has a teenage daughter Bailey. Everything in life seems normal and great until Owen disappears, running from his past. Hannah and her stepdaughter start piecing together who Owen really was, but what they find is not what they expected.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Okay, honestly, this is a classic and one of the best books of all time. If you haven't read it yet, you're missing out and way behind. Since this is such a good series, I'll give a good description by quoting Goodreads' portrayal.
"In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love."
