Thanksgiving Facts 🦃

Hello everyone!! Since American Thanksgiving quickly approaches, I decided to do a post on a couple of Thanksgiving facts.

  1. The first American Thanksgiving was a three-day feast that included 50 Pilgrims (out of the 102 that arrived in America) and 90 Native Americans, celebrating the successful first harvest. They likely didn’t eat any turkey!

  2. The Continental Congress designated several national days of Thanksgiving during the American Revolution.

  3. George Washington made the first proclamation of a national Thanksgiving Day during his time as president, and John Adams and John Madison followed suit.

  4. The State of New York was the first to adopt a state-wide Thanksgiving holiday in 1871.

  5. Sarah Josepha Hale, who wrote the song “Mary had a Little Lamb,” wrote letters, published editorials, and gave speeches in favor of a national Thanksgiving holiday for 36 years. Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, during the Civil War.

  6. The first Thanksgiving football game was held between Yale and Princeton in 1876, and the first NFL game on Thanksgiving Day was held in 1920.

  7. 90% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and the butterball turkey hotline gets 10,000 calls a year!

  8. An American consumes on average 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day.

  9. 46 million turkeys are eaten in the United States on Thanksgiving.

Thank you guys so much for your support and encouragement over the past couple of weeks!

Happy Thanksgiving!!
