June TCK Guest Post: Losing Friends

Hi guys! You may remember me, Avery, from the article A Day in the Life of a TCK. Well, today I’m back again to write another article for you guys to read! We TCKs have to deal with losing a lot of important things in our life, including good friends that we have taken time to bond with. Today I have decided to give you guys some tips about how to get over those losses that we have to deal with. Enjoy!

1. Allow yourself to grieve

It is important to know that it is okay to take time and cry. A thing that you can do to help you through this time of grieving is you can write a letter to the friend that just left. Write down all of your feelings about them moving/leaving you. It can be anger, sadness, or whatever emotions that you need to get out of you. You don’t actually have to send the letter to them, but throw it away or burn it if you’d like to. This is to allow you to say what you need to say, not for them to actually read it.

2. Avoid clinging onto social media

A lot of people will just cling onto social media after their friend moves away, because they think that it will make them feel better. They will do anything that they think will make them feel better. Trust me, if you just stare at a computer or some sort of device all day because you think that it will make you feel better, you are wrong. Instead, try to do something productive. Here are some ideas:

  • Write down some ideas of how you can stay in touch with that friend that just left

  • Draw or sketch something that you are good at drawing

  • Exercise

  • Listen to music and dance to it if you want to

3. Reflect on the friendship

Reflecting is always good to do after something big happens in your life. Think through the different fun times and memories that you have had with that friend that just moved away. You can also spend some time writing down some things that you are thankful for about them. Then, to add to that you can share those things that you wrote down with someone (but only if you feel comfortable doing that).

These tips that I’ve just shared with you guys have really helped me through a lot of hard times when my friends move away. I hope that they will help you guys too. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this article! We have one guest post per month. If you would like to be a guest writer for The TCK Times, email us at tcktimes@gmail.com.
